The All India Anti Terrorist Front - Thane District (Western Region) organised the Dahanu Peace Run - 2009 on 16th August, under the Presidentship of Mr. Santosh Shetty.
To grace the occassion, were present four Olympians; Mrs. P. T. Usha - queen of Indian track & field and nicknamed "Payyoli Express", Mrs. Shiny Abraham (Wilson), Mrs. M. D. Walsamma and Mr. Anand Menezes from Vasai.
The event saw an unpresedented response with around 2000+ participants running the streets of Dahanu, a small coastal town on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Lining the roads stood parents, friends and on-lookers cheering the runners as they passed by. Dressed in white t-shirts, the event proposed to spread the message "Lets Run Together To Bring In Peace, Harmony, & A Sense of Belongingness". The highlight of the event however was the participation of the Physically Challenged people.
Speaking to the huge gathering and later to the Press, P. T. Usha said, “Look at today’s athletes. They have all the best facilities, but lack in standards. They seem to lack the killer instinct,”. She further said "Participation is important than winning medals. Schools should encourage students to participate in sports events.”
