An effortless walk through timeless legend: Dahanu's Cultural Heritage

It is but the simplicity of the temples and their faith, which pulsates through the clustered two-km stretch of Dahanu Gaon (village). Here every pundit (priest) believes their temple to be the oldest and powerful. The magical myths and legends draw worshippers of every God to these tiny shrines to beg forgiveness and solution to every conceivable problem. The information herein has been the result of a case study by INTACH, Chapter Dahanu under the Convenorship of Ms. Phiroza Tafti. Due credit for the concept and content to Ms. Natasha Zarine. (Copyrights reserved by Natash Zarine) Through research and confirmation it has been established that the oldest of the 16 temples between Parnaka and Fort is the Hanuman Temple that was first established to mark the end of the village and the beginning of the Fort. The Hanumanji Temple was built 285 years ago at the entry point of the Fort during Shivaji Maharaj's time by Ranaji Shinde. Just opposite the tiny temple stands a flagpost with a temple-flag hoisted atop as a landmark signifying the existence of a temple in the vicinity. Hanumanji's flag is represented by a sun and moon. Under the Monkey-God's left foot lies a crouched Shani (evil) fearing Hanumanji's power and wrath upon it. < next page >
